Identification and photometry of globular clusters in M 31 and M 33 galaxies
We have used the data from the DIRECT project to search for new globular cluster candidates in the M31 and M33 galaxies. We have found 67 new objects in M31 and 35 in M33 and confirmed 38 and 16 previously discovered ones. A V I and BV I photometry has been obtained for all the clusters in M31 and M33 respectively. Luminosity functions have been constructed for the clusters in each galaxy and c...
متن کاملObservations of M 31
As part of the Chandra GTO program we are monitoring and surveying M31 using the HRC and ACIS cameras. These observations have resolved the nuclear X-ray source into five separate sources, one of which is very soft and may (or may not!) be associated with the central super-massive black hole. In addition, the superb spatial resolution and low scattering of the Chandra telescope allows us to una...
متن کاملXMM - Newton survey of the Local Group galaxy M 33 ⋆
In an XMM-Newton raster observation of the bright Local Group spiral galaxy M 33 we study the population of X-ray sources (X-ray binaries, supernova remnants) down to a 0.2–4.5 keV luminosity of 10 35 erg s −1 – more than a factor of 10 deeper than earlier ROSAT observations. EPIC hardness ratios and optical and radio information are used to distinguish between different source classes. The sur...
متن کاملObservations of the Nucleus of M 33
The nearby galaxy M33 hosts the most luminous steady X-ray source in the Local Group. The high spatial resolution of Chandra allows us to confirm that this ultra-luminous X-ray source is within the nucleus and rule out at the 4.6σ level a previously proposed possible counterpart located 1 away. The X-ray spectrum is well fitted by a disc blackbody with kTin=1.18±0.02 keV and Rin(cos θ)=57±3 km,...
متن کاملTelescope Observations of Novae in M 49
A search for novae in M49 (NGC 4472) has been undertaken with the Hubble Space Telescope. A 55-day observing campaign in F555W (19 epochs) and F814W (five epochs) has led to the discovery of nine novae. We find that M49 may be under-abundant in slow, faint novae relative to the Milky Way and M31. Instead, the decline rates of the M49 novae are remarkably similar to those of novae in the LMC. Th...
